Warm weather brings childhood memories of an ice cream truck sounding and strolling neighborhood streets. In our recent workshop ~ BEEP BEEP! SWEET TREATS, artists created ~ Ice Cream Truck Sculptures! Love that we still have a few days to celebrate and soak up summer! The workshop week was spectacular and our mini makers were beaming to exhibit their one-of-a-kind creations. Along with an ice cream truck, each artist also created a mini picnic table and handmade sweet treats for imaginative + interactive play! Turn it up and take a peek at our short + sweet clip to an ice cream truck melody, highlighting the wondrous week!
You may have seen our Collaged Ice Cream Cones created with children in our outdoor art studio for a recent downtown event. My friend Bar Rucci, over at Art Bar Blog was a huge inspiration in creating these paper sprinkled + cherry topped cones. Take a look at her fantastic process creating Paper Mache Ice Cream Sundaes and Cardboard Ice Cream Cones! Here’s a little secret, Barbara has a beyond inspiring book coming out this fall which I’ve had the opportunity to preview (cover to cover) and preorder ~ Art Workshop for Children: How to Foster Original Thinking with more than 25 Process Art Experiences. All I can say is reserve your copy today, it’s truly one of the BEST BOOKS for creating with children that’s ever hit the printing press. Personally promise it will be a studio go-to and gem that you’ll open again and again!
On a side note, Handmade Charlotte just shared the cutest + tiniest + tastiest treat, Gingerbread Ice Cream Trucks! Maybe you’ve also seen Hello Wonderful’s DIY Pretend Play Ice Cream Cones using plaster? Just a wee bit in love with both ideas!

Exploring {hands-on + mixed-media + sculpture + mask making} in just four days together from 9AM to noon in our MAGICAL MASK MAKING workshop, each 6 – 9 year old artist created a magical dragon mask! Each artist was super excited to take home their 3-D sculpture just before the July 4th festivities got underway! We were thrilled to create eleven of these 3-D sculptures primarily out of recycled + reclaimed + re-used goods. The interior of each sculpture housed a handcrafted, plaster, facial mask. A peek at creating in our outdoor art studio at May’s First Friday in historic downtown Carbondale | CO! HANDMAKERY: A Children’s Art Studio had the opportunity be a sponsor at the Family Block Party for a second year! The Family Block Party is an annual event that includes a fabulous live band, beautiful face painting, exciting carnival games + a bounce house, arts + crafts {with us}, sweet adoptable pets looking for a forever home, a silent auction full of amazing giveaways, food + drink hosted by The Village Smithy Restaurant and more! Funds benefit Colorado Animal Rescue, Children’s Rocky Mountain Preschool and Carbondale Recreation! This night wouldn’t be possible without all the fabulous organizers, volunteers, local businesses, community sponsors + supporters and all the MANY families + friends that attended the 4-8PM celebration of moving into spring!
Happy 1st Birthday HANDMAKERY, so wonderful that SO many amazing HANDMAKERY artists + volunteers joined us for an action packed evening! Last year we made our debut at Family Block Party 2013, which was another incredible night of celebration and art-making with children!

Carve Away! An Exploration of Linocuts and Block Printing

Discover the in depth world of printmaking as artists focus their week on linocuts and block printing. We explore the elements and principles of art and design while using our imaginations to come up with expressive themes for our art. We gather inspiration from everything around us such as nature, music, travel and more! Join the fun to create large scale carvings to print and an intricate set of stamps. Your everyday world of art making will be forever changed with this new set of printmaking skills!
Ami Maes has taught classes at Anderson Ranch, the Aspen Art Museum, the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies and the Wyly Community Art Center. She is the recipient of the Mary Ellen Nix Art Educator of the Year Award through the Aspen Art Museum. Ami is the founder + creative director of HANDMAKERY: A Children’s Art Studio in Carbondale | CO and also instructs art at the middle school level.

Local teens + HANDMAKERY came together to create over 17 soft sculptures using reclaimed wools to give back to their community! Each teen created a fox to live at the local library for children to read with, while visiting the library. The process of hand-stitching these little woodland creatures took several weeks of LOVE + PATIENCE + DEDICATION + HARD WORK + HANDWORK + GIVING OF THE HEART ♥. Each fox is very unique and includes a photo of the artist + the name and personality of the fox! Check these out at the local, NEW, library! {Photos of the process, foxes + delivery below.}

A few favorite photos of the week instructing in the Children’s Program at Anderson Ranch Art Center in Snowmass, Colorado, over the week of Forth of July! In just four art filled days, we explored Monoprint Monday to Texture Exploration Tuesday to Wild for Linoleum Blocks Wednesday to Celebrating the 4th of July (off to be with family + friends) all the way to Freedom for Printing Friday! The class was sold out, so we had a group of 15 amazing little ones, ranging from 6-8 years of age, from all over the nation! Each artist explored everything from paste paper, monoprinting, creating with texture tools, transferring, linoleum carving, collagraphs, silk screening, plus various printing processes! The creativity, independence, confidence, and relationships formed this week, in these 15 aspiring artists, was incredible to watch blossom. So thankful I got to be part of it and to see it all in action firsthand, wouldn’t have wanted to miss it for the world.
Think you’ll be amazed at a few of the images captured when hands were not busy creating or full of printing ink! At 2:30 on Friday we celebrated with the children and their families with a little indoor/outdoor art exhibit + popcycles! Excited to be on the schedule for next summer! If you get the opportunity to visit Anderson Ranch Art Center you’ll be beyond amazed, exploring all the specialty studios- woodworking, ceramics, painting, just to name a few! I encourage you to head up to Anderson Ranch Art Center on a Friday afternoon to explore the studios, the artwork produced throughout the week in all the specialty studios and to have lunch in the cafe, which is by far, the BEST homemade food around- definitely one of the teaching perks!
